Jimi Hendrix’s 1965 Fender Stratocaster – the first guitar famously burnt by the rock icon – will go under the hammer in a special auction of sought-after rock'n'roll memorabilia this coming September.

The auction sale also includes:

* The last surviving drum-kit of Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham (est. £20,000)

* Jim Morrison’s final notebook of poetry and musings before his death in Paris in 1971 (est. £80,000 - £100,000)

* The song-sheet for Band Aid’s We Are The World – signed by the likes of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan (est. £5,000 - £6,000)

Here's the background behind Jimi's Strat, which has an estimated value of £500,000:

Hendrix played the Finsbury Astoria on the opening night of the Walker Brothers tour on March 31, 1967.

Hendrix instructed close confidante and press officer Tony Garland to buy lighter fluid from a local hardware store, and at the end of his show flames flew into the air as the guitarist set fire to the base of his Fender Stratocaster.

After the show the guitar was kept at the home of Noel Redding (bass player with the Jimi Hendrix Experience) before Garland collected it and stored it at his parents’ garage in Hove. It was only unearthed by Garland’s nephew in 2007.

The Astoria guitar remains Hendrix’s only surviving burnt guitar fully intact – with scorch marks still visible along the neck and pickboard.

The auction is set to take place on September 4 at the Idea Generation Gallery, 11 Chance Street, London E2 7JB.
